Be realistic about limits. Whole-home heating, cooling, and large appliances need far more energy than a consumer UPS provides. The aim of a battery plan is to preserve access, light, and awareness — not to run your entire house off the grid.
The manual override rule
Above all else, adopt one rule: every critical device must have a manual override that needs neither the internet nor smart power.
Run through your home and check the essentials:
- Locks: Is there a physical key or an on-device keypad? Where is the backup key kept, and does everyone who needs it know?
