Mail app for macOS will soon receive overdue AI update

Apple delivered a notable update to the Mail app a few weeks ago, introducing smart categories to keep your inbox clutter-free and make it easier to discover relevant content. The hack, however, was limited to the mobile platform and never appeared on Mac.

That’s about to change soon. In the latest edition of his On In the newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman states that mail categories will finally appear in the desktop client in April.

The report notes that the change will come with the macOS 15.4 update. A few days ago, Apple released the third beta version of macOS 15.3, which means that a test version of macOS 15.4 is still a few weeks away.

Categories basically classifies all your emails into four classes. He Primary The tag is for personal communication and urgent things. Promotions the category is for sales and offers, Updates deals mainly with social and news issues, while Proceedings It is the center for alerts related to purchases.

If users find it useful, they can change the email category of any sender in their inbox. Of course, if the categorization system fails, users will also be able to disable it by simply returning to the classic List view.

Apple

Apple Intelligence has already arrived on the Mac platform through different destinations, including Mail. Some of the AI-powered features already available in the Mail app include Smart Reply, Priority Messages, email digests, and digest previews.

Another notable advantage of Apple Intelligence in Mail is the arrival of writing tools. Powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT stack, it allows users to draft, refine, rewrite, proofread, and rearrange text content.

For one, it makes your entire inbox much more organized, sorting emails neatly and putting all important conversations into their own unified container.

Here’s what Bryan M. Wolfe of Digital Trends wrote after testing the categorization system:

“After updating to iOS 18.2 and finding the new Mail Categories feature, I quickly realized that it complicated rather than simplified my digital life. I noticed that some emails that should have gone to my main inbox ended up in random categories.”

Additionally, the system is quite rigid, as you cannot create a fifth (or more) unique category for your emails. If Bloomberg’s report turns out to be true, Apple still has some free time to evaluate early feedback and fix existing issues before implementing categories in the Mac mail client.
