Meta’s Oakley smart glasses could be the next big trend in wearables

He Ray-Ban Meta Smart glasses are just the beginning for Meta, if a new report detailing the company’s hardware plan for next year is accurate. Meta apparently has multiple new smart glasses projects and is working on other associated wearables to accompany them according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Among the main novelties is a possible partnership with Oakley, which like Ray-Ban is a brand under the EssilorLuxottica umbrella, for a device codenamed Supernova 2. Unlike Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta will have a central chamber and will be designed for cyclists and other activity sports enthusiasts. . Oakley Sphaera(pictured above) and so they’re not really made as an everyday pair of smart glasses. The specialized design of the Supernova 2 means that they have the potential to attract a highly motivated and very different group of buyers compared to Ray-Ban models.

Oakley Meta smart glasses will not stop Meta from developing the Ray-Ban Meta range. In addition to launching the existing pair in more countries, it apparently intends to launch a follow-up product codenamed Hypernova. The big feature change will be the addition of a screen on one of the lenses, where notifications, applications and photo previews will be displayed. However, this will likely also mean a big increase in cost, with an expected price of $1,000. You can buy a pair of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses today, without a screen, starting at $299.

Interestingly, Meta is also testing companion wearables to help operate the Hypernova smart glasses. A bracelet codenamed Ceres has been designed to replace the touch controls on the arm of smart glasses, while a more complex wearable device similar to a smartwatch with a screen is also being developed.

The report also provides an update on the Orion AR smart glasses prototype The company has already teased that it will ship to developers in 2026, and then the technology will form the basis of an earlier consumer smart glasses codenamed Artemis for release in 2027.

Currently Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses does not have many major competitorsBut companies are working on compelling alternatives. Digital Trends spoke with Halliday at CES 2025 about their smart glasses, which have a small screen inside the frame, for example. Meta clearly does not want its market advantage to disappear, based on these interesting plans.
